Reykjavík Pride astro-weather

Reykjavík Pride week has started and the astrology forecast for the week is pretty uneventful, especially when compared to the last few weeks and the next couple of weeks after. In reality this should be a week where we take the time to rest and recharge, but us queers are known for going against the grain so I’m sure we’ll accept this challenge from the universe. Although there isn’t too much happening, there are various undercurrents happening, especially with Mercury turning retrograde last Sunday a few hours after a New Moon in Leo.

New Moons happen when the Sun and Moon meet up in the sky and this is marks the beginning of a new cycle, which reaches a climax on the Full Moon. In mundane astrology (which focuses on daily life on a larger scale) New Moons are particularly important and they can be looked at to forecast general happenings for the next month or until the next New Moon. Although the planets are all in the same positions internationally, the houses can tell us a lot about what this means in each place. In Iceland the New Moon directs our attention to locally powerful individuals and groups, as well as women and women’s rights movements. This seems very on the nose because Halla Tómasdóttir officially took on the role of president, the highest office in the country, last week. The sign of Leo, the Sun as well as the house they sit in in the local chart all point to heads of state.

The lunation chart looks favourable for protests and demonstrations, a good reminder that Pride celebrations started as and still are protests. Libra Rising cares deeply about justice and equity, but in this chart the Rising is surrounded by the South Node and Black Moon Lilith. Lilith is passionate about justice and solidarity with marginalised groups, and she can become pretty intense in the face of injustice. In Libra this intensity is a bit tempered so that she has an easier time speaking and organising with her peers, accepting compromise and finding ways for everyone to get theirs. That doesn’t mean she’ll accept less than she’s owed or that she has less power than usual! A few other placements in the chart affecting this can show an undercurrent of disagreement that’s going on, like little pre-quakes that might explode at any time.

Mercury retrograde will be apparent throughout the week and through the whole month of August. Mercury turns retrograde three times a year on average, for around three weeks at a time. These are weeks where things such as communication, travel, contracts and scheduling goes awry. When we know about this time beforehand we can easily make precautions and keep reminding ourselves that there will probably be technical issues, people will show up late, traffic will be unusually heavy or there will be misunderstandings. So long as we remember this we can make sure we are being especially clear in our communication, ask others to explain if we’re not a 100% sure what they mean, make extra time to double check all technical things or for people to show up, and try to leave the house a bit earlier than usual if we can. Mercury retrograde gives us a chance to reassess things and often it brings us an opportunity to redo things better than before. Retrogrades are always about re-membering, re-doing and re-thinking when things don’t work out the first time around - and sometimes things won’t work out properly until after the retrograde motion is finished.

On Wednesday, the Sun forms a sextile to Jupiter and on Thursday morning, Mercury and Venus meet up in Virgo. These aspects pump up the celebratory mood of the week and despite Mercury retrograde, these two days can be especially good to connect with other people. This is especially true for any social groups we belong to, like the queer community, so if you are planning to show up to any of this week’s events, then Wednesday and Thursday are probably the best days for it.

The march itself on Saturday will probably be gorgeous, because the Midheaven, the highest point of the chart and the part that is most visible, is in Leo, who really knows how to make things glamorous.

Throughout the week we have other aspects starting to form which will become increasingly loud in the next couple of weeks, and we’ll start feeling them this week. Some of us will be super open and want to lose themselves in partying while others will feel like they’re being held back or that they’re not ready to let go of their inhibitions. Unexpected feelings and conversations / topics will come out of the blue for some of us and we’ll need to find a way to deal with those in as measured a way as we can. It’s important to take the time to think before we say something, and that we let other people have the benefit of the doubt, at least until we’ve asked for an explanation.

So be good to each other and happy Pride week!
