Astrology weather for Reykjavík Pride 2026

Reykjavík Pride is celebrated for a week in August and while some events start on the Monday, the formal start of the event is celebrated on Tuesday at noon. The first Pride-inspired formal event was celebrated on June 26th 1999, called Queer Weekend (is: Hinsegin helgi), to commemorate 30 years from the Stonewall riot in the US. One year later, the first Pride march was planned and throughout the years, the march has developed into a week-long event called Reykjavík Pride (is: Hinsegin dagar). Queer association across the country have also planned various Pride events throughout the summer. By looking at the astrological chart for the formal opening ceremony this Tuesday and the march itself on Saturday and comparing those to the first two events in '99 and 2000, I can see some of the prevailing themes for Pride this year.

Reykjavík Pride has Libra Rising in both this year's chart as well as the original chart from '99. Back then, Mars was about to rise up, which gave the movement attractive and admirable qualities as well as the knowledge of how to get their message heard without provoking the status quo too much. Mars also gave the drive to use this platform to make society pay attention and wouldn't just settle for crumbs. This year, Mars is in the sign of Gemini, which will give us the drive and courage to use our communicative skills excellently. The Rising signs of astrology charts are always very important and Libra is the home sign of Venus, the goddess of love and passion. As this year's Pride is officially opened, Venus will be in Virgo, but will quickly move into her home sign of Libra and will be there when we march on Saturday. As such we can expect an exceptionally beautiful, colourful and ambitious floats this year. In Libra, Venus will be opposite Neptune, which can certainly give strong inspiration for outfits and visuals, but it's important to know that any romantic meetings during that weekend will probably be fleeting, or turn out too good to be true once a few days have passed!

Reykjavík Pride is timed to coincide with the week after frídagur verslunarmanna, a bank holiday on the first Monday of August. While this means the actual dates move around quite a bit, the Sun is always around the centre degrees of Leo. This way, it lights up very important parts of both of the old charts, connected to public visibility, reputation, opinions of others and community. At the same time, it nudges Uranus in both older charts, which symbolises how it breaks and transforms old societal norms and outdated attitudes. This year, the energy of Leo is especially strong since there will be a total Solar Eclipse in Leo only a few days after Pride week, which will be visible in Iceland. Eclipses (both Lunar and Solar) happen during Eclipse seasons, which are 4-6 week periods that happen every six months or so. Last time we had an Eclipse in Leo was in 2018 but since Eclipses happen in the same signs every 9-ish years, we also had Leo Eclipses in both 1999 and 2000. Eclipses usually mark big endings and big beginnings, so it can be helpful to look back to Reykjavík Pride (or early August dates) in 2008-09 and '17-18 to get an idea of how those changes might manifest this year. Next year, in 2027, there will also be Eclipses around these dates since they take around 18 months to travel through each pair of signs, so the changes might not be obvious until after next week's festivities.

I know that many of us are feeling apprehensive after a recent fatal attack at Berlin Pride last July, as well as the growing hateful discourse aimed at queer people, especially trans people. But I believe astrology can help us get through difficult times by showing us what we can expect as well as what strengths we can lean on to get us through. This year, Mercury, the planet of communication, plays a prominent role for Pride. That means we will need to use communication in a careful way in order to combat prejudice and hate. In some cases, we will no doubt notice hateful or negative talk from those who cling to the past, or are scared of losing their own privilege if other, marginalised groups gain human rights. This is a common scare tactic used to make differently marginalised groups fight each other instead of standing together. So I want to remind us all that it's important to choose our battles wisely. The individuals at the source of scare tactics and propaganda are rarely worth our time or effort, as usually they are too far gone into their fear and hate. That doesn't apply to the people who see their words, however. In today's social media landscape, it's easy to get tricked into arguments with people whose only goal is to get their words seen, regardless of how articulate or skilled at debate the other person is. Feeding the trolls only hurts our own mental health and energy, and letting them trick you into bad-faith arguments does nothing for anyone. I recommend writing just one comment (and then turning off notifications for it), or simply write your own update for social media, where you can articulate your points in peace and ask people to share.

¹ In '93 and '94 there were demonstration marches for queer rights but I chose these two events to use instead as they were more clearly the forerunners of what Reykjavík Pride has become today. It would also be possible to look at the event chart for when the Reykjavík Pride organisation was started, but this would say more about the history of the organisation in my opinion, rather than the community events.
